Lifeway Kefir.

A few weeks ago, I received a voucher in the mail from Influenster.com for a complimentary Lifeway Kefir product of my choice to test and review.  For those of you who have no idea what Lifeway Kefir is, you’re not alone.  Before receiving my voucher, I had never heard of the company before.  Basically, Lifeway Kefir is a new line hitting grocery shelves.  They have products ranging from smoothies to frozen yogurt.  Lifeway Kefir is so new, most grocery stores don’t even carry it yet, so if you’re interested in trying it out after reading this review, please visit their website at www.lifeway.net to find a location near you.  I really wanted to test the frozen yogurt, but none of the grocery stores that carry Lifeway Kefir near me sold it.  I ended up settling with a blueberry smoothie.

Before I get on with the actual review, let me explain what kefir is.  Coming straight from the bottle “Kefir is the smooth, tart, and refreshing cousin of yogurt, and its roots can be traced back more than 2000 years.”

This is what the display looked like at my local Target.  Not very pretty, but it’s there.  I honestly would have missed it had I not known it was located by the yogurt.  If I remember correctly they had original tart, blueberry, coconut, raspberry, and strawberry.

The smoothies are a Lowfat probiotic smoothie with 12 live and active kefir cultures.  The smoothies are 99% lactose free, certified Gluten-free, naturally cultured, and contain no artificial sweeteners.  A serving size consists of 1 cup and contains 140 calories, 2g of fat, 1.5g sat fat, 10mg cholesterol, 125mg sodium, 20g carbs, 20g sugars, and 11g protein.

Before drinking the smoothie, you have to make sure you thoroughly shake the smoothie to evenly distribute all of its flavors, which is hard to do before opening because the bottle is literally filled to the top.  I found the smoothie tasted better once I drank a bit and shook it again.  I had my hubby try it as well and he refuses to take another drink because it was “too sweet” for his taste.  I honestly feel like I’m drinking yogurt rather than a smoothie.  You can taste the blueberry, but it’s not too overpowering so you’re able to taste the tartness of the kefir as well.  I almost wish it was a yogurt so I can throw some granola, almonds, and walnuts on top of it.  Yum!  I have about half of the bottle left now and I’m thinking I’m going to use the rest to toss in my blender with some frozen fruit to make a real smoothie.  I’ve read a few other Influenster member’s reviews on the kefir and it seems like blending it with fruit is the best way to enjoy the kefir.  These Lifeway Kefir smoothies are great for a grab and go breakfast or for busy mom’s like myself who don’t have time to cook themselves a real meal.  This isn’t a product I’d normally pick up on my grocery outings, but I’d definitely try it again.  I also received a $1.50 off coupon for 2 Lifeway Kefir products from Influenster that I’m hoping to use before they expire at the end of the month so I can try their frozen yogurt.  I think I might like that better.  I’m kinda wishing I would have picked up the coconut flavor instead of settling with blueberry (my husband’s favorite).  All in all, it was a great product and I definitely recommend you try it.
